By adding in the specifics to get the citation, you would then need to remove the specifics for the bibliography entry. For that reason alone, I will probably just craft my citations in EE format, put them in a note with the file and maybe look at using Zotero for the bibliography.

That makes perfect sense. I think I breezed over that part in Donna's tutorial. There seems to be a balance each of us will need to find to get the most benefit from Zotero's abilities. 

Admittedly, I've had very little use for bibliographies in my personal practice but no need to make it harder work than it has to be if I ever do need one. 

Thanks each of you. Sorry I dropped out of the conversation so abruptly yesterday. I DID finally settle on what I think is an acceptable citation (using the tips here and revisiting EE and the link to the discussion forum Ann posted). 

Linda - I like the idea of creating one reference and duplicating it.

Donna - Thanks again for your tips. I have one question (and it it probably in the guide) but is there a benefit to using the Note over the Extra field? From Linda and Ann's comments, I see two possibilities:

Creating one bibliographic citation, as Linda described, and adding a note for each "detail." In that case, when viewing the library, the one record will have 4-5 notes about different events/people.

The other is to create a bibliographic citation for each entry with the details in the "extra" field. 

I suppose  - now that I've written it out that the downside to the latter is that you will have multiple bibliographic entries for the same record. What I don't yet have a grasp on is why or when this would matter. (possibly due to not regularly using bibliographies in the first place)

What is the impact of either option when using the MS Word add-on to insert a citation to your report?

(So sorry for the newbie questions. I'm a questioner by nature and in this case I'm really wanting to start using Zotero the "right" way before I get too far into any habits that may cause me more work or wasted time later.)

Donna - if this needs to be moved to a different thread, please let me know.

 

 

I think the combination of Zotero for the source information and the note for the citations, as Ann suggested, makes the most sense.

I am also wondering the same thing. I haven't used a bibliography since college and have not had a reason to use one in my genealogy.

I am going back in forth in my head about the idea of bibliographic entries versus other types of entries.

So far I have added 74 items to my Austria Church Records folder. There are 100's more. One entry for each baptism, marriage, and death. I attached a note to each entry with the full citation and attached a link to the image stored on my computer. I used a book section but only filled in the title field and in the date field, I put the date the event took place. My titles are written as: 
Sacrament Surname, Given Name Middle name/s.  

When Donna W. mentioned using the extra field for the complete citation I started wondering if this would be a better approach. It would save me from creating a separate note for the citation.

The idea of using one entry for multiple items also seems to be a good idea. 

Now that I am writing this out having one entry will not change the number of links to the specific images. But will reduce the number of main entries in a folder and make one very long note or there could be three/four notes one for each sacrament. Baptisms, Confirmations, Marriages & Deaths. But that would mean if I want to use the Related tab to link the events of one person I would have to wade through a massive amount of links. 

I am leaning toward using one entry for each sacrament, using the extra field for the complete citation and then adding my link to the image and using the Related Tab to link a person's events together. 

I do have a sense/feeling that for other records using the bibliographic entry would be the better option. Lots to think about.

 

One more thing about my Austrian church records. These are images I scanned from the microfilm in Salt Lake. But since then I have found them online at the Voralberger Landesarchive. The online images have a lower resolution than my scans and there is not a way to download them. 

I am going back and forth about whether to include the online information in my working notes or adding a second entry and linking it to the one I have for my scanned images using the related tab. This may be the epitome of overkill!

But this may also be a great way to use the bibliographic entry and link that with the related tab to the individual scanned entries.

PS FamilySearch has scanned them but they are not viewable online or in the library on the computers.

I may have been overthinking the parish registers, but have decided to do what is easiest and gathers all of the information I want for a citation. Additional information, like transcription is added in the note. Here is my workflow for parish records: pull website (English version) into Zotero; at the end of the title, I simply add the number of where the item is listed on the page plus the name of my ancestor. I put the date of the event in the date field, and here is my resulting footnote:

Since I also have many, many Norwegian ancestors, this workflow allows me to get them all in quickly, and I can easily revise the ones I need when and if I need to publish something requiring an EE style citation.
