About Genohistory

Genohistory is devoted to researching the past at human scale—the scale of experience accessible to an individual through personal networks. It brings the disciplines of history and genealogy into sustained conversation, combining the historian’s attention to context, interpretation, and change over time with the genealogist’s skills and methodology for identifying particular people, relationships, families, and communities.

The result is neither history with genealogical details added nor genealogy embellished with historical background. Genohistory examines interconnected people within the circumstances of their own time and place, seeking to understand not only who they were, but how they lived, related, acted, and experienced the worlds around them. Committed also to drawing from other relevant disciplines, genohistory does something simultaneously broad and specific. It recognizes that the human past was always personal.

This website is the public home of that work. It exists to serve researchers who believe that something uniquely valuable emerges when identifiable people remain visible within a fully researched historical context.

The Work Behind Genohistory

Golden Channel Publishing is the publishing business through which I create and distribute books, websites, courses, and research tools for the study of history, genealogy, genohistory, and related subjects.

Genohistory is the intellectual and public-facing identity of the work: an approach to studying the past through people, relationships, context, evidence, place, and time.

Genohistory Labs™ is the research and development identity within Golden Channel Publishing. It is where the methods, standards, tools, and experimental applications of genohistorical research are developed.

Tarapinx™ is the integrated research platform being developed by Genohistory Labs. It is designed to help researchers of many disciplines to organize questions, hypotheses, assertions, evidence, sources, people, places, and time within a disciplined structure of inquiry.

Together, these identities serve different but connected purposes:

  • Golden Channel Publishing publishes and distributes the work.
  • Genohistory defines its intellectual center.
  • Genohistory Labs develops its methods and tools.
  • Tarapinx provides the platform in which those methods can be applied.

About Me

I am Donna Cox Baker, a historian, genealogist, publishing professional, and the founder of Golden Channel Publishing. I hold a Ph.D. in history and spent much of my professional career in historical publishing, including editing a state history magazine. I retired from university employment in 2021, though not from research, writing, publishing, or the work of understanding the past.

I began pursuing genealogy as a personal passion in the mid-1980s and started integrating it into my professional work in 2014. Over time, I became increasingly dissatisfied with the separation between history and genealogy.

History without close attention to identifiable people can flatten human experience into categories and broad conclusions. Genealogy without historical context can produce a carefully constructed lineage while leaving much of the life around it unexplored.

Genohistory grew from my conviction that neither discipline should be sidelined. Each contributes something essential to the reconstruction and interpretation of the human past.

In 2018, I founded Golden Channel Publishing to create books, websites, and tools that help historians and genealogists manage research and produce richer, more disciplined work. In 2020, I launched the blog Genohistory on Purpose, where I began publicly defining my conception of genohistory. That work led to the Genohistory website, established in 2021 as a home for researchers drawn to this integrated way of studying the past.

Genohistory Labs and Tarapinx are the next stage of that development: an effort to translate the principles of genohistory into durable research methods, tools, and structures that can serve serious researchers across fields.

A Word about My Use of A.I.

I use artificial intelligence as one of several tools that support my work in research, publishing, software development, teaching, writing, editing, and visual interpretation. It can reduce the time required to move an idea from concept to publication. It can assist with organization, drafting, technical problem-solving, image development, and the refinement of materials. It does not replace historical evidence, source criticism, interpretation, editorial judgment, or human responsibility.

The ideas, arguments, research methods, teaching approaches, and editorial decisions presented through Golden Channel Publishing, Genohistory, Genohistory Labs, and Tarapinx remain my own. When I use artificial intelligence to help create images, those images are treated as interpretive visual aids rather than documentary evidence. They may support the atmosphere, subject, or teaching purpose of a page, but they do not replace historical records, original photographs, cited sources, or verified scholarship.

I also recognize that generative artificial intelligence raises serious questions for writers, artists, publishers, teachers, software developers, and researchers. I aim to use these tools thoughtfully and transparently. I do not intend to imitate living artists, reproduce copyrighted works, or represent AI-generated material as handmade art or historical documentation. I support the continuing work to clarify how copyright, fair use, licensing, attribution, and compensation should apply when copyrighted materials are used in the development of generative AI systems, including protections for work such as my own. At the same time, I do not believe that responsible use of these developing tools should cease while the legal and ethical standards surrounding them continue to evolve. Historians understand that major technological changes bring disruption, contested interests, and a prolonged period in which society must establish new boundaries and responsibilities.

Artificial intelligence may assist with mechanics, presentation, and development. Responsibility for the resulting work remains mine.
