Zotero adding an extra "p"
Quote from Megan Walker on July 19, 2025, 4:50 amHi all
I have set up different format styles in Zotero following the book and then rejigging as I see fit for my needs. Anyhow I noticed recently that Zotero is adding an extra p when I put in p. within a field. I have attached images to show what I mean. In Example-001 you can see that in the Series Number field I have put "1985, September Quarter, Volume:34, p.258, Walsall, Staffordshire, England" yet when I do a style preview I get the image as seen is Image-002 with an extra p placed in front of p.258 - "Albert Edward Washbrook, Death Index, GRO Online Indexes, 1985, September Quarter, Volume:34, pp.258, Walsall, Staffordshire, England (General Register Office, 2025), https://gro.gov.uk."
Is anyone able to explain why this is occurring?
Thanks
Megan

Quote from Donna Cox Baker on July 20, 2025, 9:25 pmWell, Megan, that is bizarre. I have no idea why Zotero would alter something in the middle of a text field. I think you'll need to take this one to the programmers at the Zotero.org forum. Definitely looks to be a bug to me--not working as designed. If it IS working as designed, I'd be curious to find out what the design might do to other text it finds in the Series field. Please let us know what you find!

Quote from Megan Walker on July 21, 2025, 9:32 amOkay so I put up a post here and one response said "What's happening is that Zotero (or rather the citation formatting processor it uses) is a bit too aggressive in trying to understand and parse the contents of fields, and understands "p. 258" as the number of pages, and since 258 is more than 1 then uses the plural abbreviation "pp.". I think that goes a bit far and should very likely get fixed, but that might take a bit."
So basically Zotero sees the p. and the number of pages and is just "assisting" me by putting in pp. I don't know how we get that fixed as the only way to chat with them is through the forums and hope the developers see it.

Quote from Donna Cox Baker on July 21, 2025, 5:54 pmThe developers do watch the forum and have probably already put this on the fix list. It's enlightening to me to discover anything is being parsed in the Series field. I usually store page numbers with the notes I take on a source, then add them in as detail when I am creating a footnote. And I tend to put extra detail I want in a citation into the Loc in Archive field, where available . You might want to experiment with either or both of those.
Thanks for the heads up on the parsing!
