Setting up the Zotero connector in NeoOffice Professional

[The following is only relevant to MacIntosh (Apple) users]

One may encounter issues in setting up Zotero to work with NeoOffice Professional after upgrading to Sierra, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur. You'll likely get an error if you try to install the Zotero connector during the Zotero installation process. Also; if you try to set up the connector from withing NeoOffice you will also encounter an error. Don't fret about this! There is a fairly straightforward solution. Read on...

The webpage, https://neowiki.neooffice.org/index.php/Sierra_and_High_Sierra_Upgrade_Issues, contains the following:

Some database features and wizards in NeoOffice require Java. If NeoOffice displays a dialog that says Java is required, install Java SE Development Kit (JDK) from Oracle. Note: only Oracle's JDK will work. Neither Apple's Java nor Oracle's Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) will work.

Here's what to do…

  1. Download and install the above noted ORACLE JAVA SDK. (You may need to make a free account to do this.)
(Note that the development kit is called for in the above note. It installs the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) as part of the installation of the Java Development Kit (JDK). The system will only tolerate ONE version of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and the installation should remove any pre-existing components.)
  2. In the NeoOffice toolbar, go to NeoOffice>Preferences>Advanced
  3. Check "Use a Java runtime environment", if it is not already checked.
  4. Select the radio button next to the "Oracle Corporation" JRE in the list below.
    Press "Ok".
  5. In the NeoOffice toolbar, go to Tools>Extension Manager.
  6. Click on “Zotero LibreOffice Integration.”
  7. Click on “Enable.” (This will load and initialize the add-on.
  8. Click on "Close."

Steps 5-8 are necessary as the current NeoOffice Professional (as of September 2020) appears to be shipped with the Zotero connector installed, but disabled. This is why you may have encountered an error in trying to install it during the installation of Zotero .

And that's it!

Zotero and NeoOffice Professional should now work as in the Zotero for Genealogy book.
