Potential way to access Kindle eBooks from within Zotero

[Instructions are for experienced Mac Users only]

  1. Open the Kindle app on your Mac.
  2. In the Kindle toolbar, click on Kindle>Preferences…
  3. Examine the section under the heading; ‘Content Folder' to see where YOUR computer is saving YOUR books.
  4. Open a new “Finder” window.
  5. In the Finder toolbar, click on Go>Go to Folder…
  6. In the wind presented, enter the directory in which YOUR computer is storing YOUR books and click on “Go” to display the directory contents. You will see a number of …”_EBOK” directories. These contain your DRM-protected ebooks.
  7. Select one of the directories, open it and double-click on the “….azw” file, which will cause the Kindle app to open and display the ebook.

As you can see; one might be able to establish links to these files from within Zotero and therefore be able to call them up directly from within the program. However; you may need to try a few of the “aww” files to find the one holding your desired book. The good thing is that unless you remove and replace the book, the path should be stable.

***WARNING***

YOU MUST NOT CHANGE ANYTHING IN THE DIRECTORIES.

Great idea! Thanks so much for thinking of it.

For the PC users, you will probably find your Kindle books inside your Documents folder, in "My Kindle Content." If it's not stored there, you will need to do basically the PC version of the instructions above:

Open your Kindle software. (This won't work in the Kindle Cloud Reader.)

Click on Tools--Options--Content, and note the path where your content is being stored.

Go to that location in your File Manager.

Once you've found the place...

Your books will be the files with the ".azw" extension. If you don't see your extensions, the file type is "Kindle Content." Some of the files are named with the book title. Some are named with codes. You will have to click on them to open them to know what book they are.

When you have the right file, you know where to create your Zotero attachment link.
